CKD-EPI 2021 equation · Race-free · Instant CKD stage + interpretation
Normal range: 0.6–1.2 mg/dL (men), 0.5–1.1 mg/dL (women)
Used for the CKD-EPI sex coefficient. Select the sex listed on the lab report.
| Stage | eGFR (mL/min/1.73m²) | Description | Monitoring |
|---|---|---|---|
| G1 | ≥ 90 | Normal or high — CKD only if other markers present | Annual check if risk factors |
| G2 | 60–89 | Mildly decreased | Annual monitoring |
| G3a | 45–59 | Mild to moderately decreased | Every 6 months |
| G3b | 30–44 | Moderately to severely decreased | Every 3–6 months · Nephrology referral |
| G4 | 15–29 | Severely decreased | Every 1–3 months · Prepare for RRT |
| G5 | < 15 | Kidney failure | Every 1–3 months · RRT discussion |
The CKD-EPI (Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration) 2021 equation is the current gold-standard for estimating GFR in adults. It replaced the 2009 version by removing the race coefficient — a change recommended by the National Kidney Foundation and the American Society of Nephrology.
eGFR = 142 × min(Scr/κ, 1)α × max(Scr/κ, 1)−1.200 × 0.9938Age × 1.012 [if female]
The 2021 equation performs equivalently to the 2009 race-adjusted version across diverse populations and is now the standard at major US academic medical centres.
